No! Placing snow onto the street can create a driving hazard. Pile your shovelled snow to the side of your driveway, on your property, or on the boulevard.
The owners or occupiers of property are required to remove snow and ice from their sidewalks bordering their property within 24 hours. The District may clean sidewalks after a storm but it is still the property owner's responsibility to remove snow and ice build-up.
Many de-icers such as salt are harmful to the environment and vehicles. Others may be harmful to pets. The best alternative is to shovel often and reduce the build-up of snow and ice.
In order for sand to be effective, it must be large enough to provide tire traction, but not so large as to damage headlights and windshields. If sand is too fine, it will blow off the road surface.
