Message of condolence from Mayor Patrick Van Minsel

We are heartbroken by the devastating tragedy that has shaken the small, close-knit community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of those who were killed, to the students and staff whose sense of safety has been shattered, and to every resident grappling with grief and shock. There are no words that can fully ease the pain of lives changed irreversibly in moments.

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the RCMP officers, paramedics, health-care workers, and all first responders who arrived within minutes and faced an unimaginably difficult scene with courage and professionalism. Their swift actions saved lives, and their continued support will be vital in the days ahead.

As leaders across Canada and around the world have expressed, this is a time for unity, compassion, and care for one another. We encourage everyone to lean on available supports, to check in on neighbours and loved ones, and to hold the people of Tumbler Ridge in our thoughts not only today, but in the difficult days, months, and years to come.

May the memory of those lost be honoured with love, and may this grieving community find strength in its resilience and in the compassion that surrounds it.

Mayor Patrick Van Minsel & Council
